“Life Organizing” —The way to improve your well-being
Have you always thought “Organizing means throwing things away”?
Although being organized is effective in improving quality of life, in today’s society, organizing is a complex process that requires a high level of brain activation, and throwing things away is only one element of the overall organizing process.
Mayumi Takahara will share tips on how to live happier and more comfortable life by organizing your living space through “Life Organizing,” a technique that allows you to look at your life in a bigger picture, and to structure and optimize it in the most sustainable way.
Life Organizers
A Life Organizer is an “expert who helps people optimize their lives” and is certified by JALO, the Japan Association of Life Organizers.
As “personal trainers” for improving quality of life (QOL), we look at people’s lives as a whole and support them in organizing their lives, focusing on activities of organizing and storing items. A Life Organizer is an “organizing professional and consultant who starts by organizing people’s thought process” and helps people under the philosophy of “ For easier and more comfortable lives.” However, “organizing and storing items” is not the only way.
Our time is limited, and it is uncertain how much time we all have left in life. That’s why we first work with clients to help them understand how they should use their limited time, live a better life, and create time for what they want to do and things that make them happy. Then we help them start taking action.
Our work is unique because we not only organize houses, but we do so while addressing various aspects of people’s lives.
What is Life Organizing?
Life Organizing is a concept for optimizing life. JALO defines it as “a technique to look at our lives in the bigger picture and transform them for the better.” Life organizers follow Life Organizers’ code of conduct (a model and what to keep in mind). Simply put, the name defines the philosophy and methods that Life Organizers practice.
Unlike general tidying and organizing know-how, Life Organizing focuses on “people” rather than things and space. People, including friends, family, and loved ones, are first because they are the main players. We focus on people’s minds, emotions, actions, habits, environment, and relationships. The key is to start by organizing minds.
Do you want to learn more and become a professional?
In Japan, there is no need for professional organizers to have a national certification, meaning anyone can start working in this field anytime. However, it is not enough to be good at tidying and organizing to become a professional. Basic information and knowledge in organizing, including storage tools or products, and the business skills to practice the techniques when supporting clients are essential. It requires a certain amount of time and training to acquire the necessary skills.
JALO has developed a certificate program that enables you to efficiently learn the minimum knowledge and skills necessary to start a career as a professional Life Organizer. In addition, we provide our members with a follow-up system that is essential to practice after acquiring certification, enabling continuous improvement of skills, and updating of diverse information. It helps maintain motivation for freelancers who tend to be solitary in their work.
JALO’s Life Organizer certificate program in English will
start in October 2024
Since we started our certificate program in June 2009, we have produced many active Life Organizers not only in Japan but also in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and other Asian countries. Now the long-awaited English version (e-learning format) is launching as part of JALO’s professional development program!
Although there are many differences among countries in housing styles, culture, customs, laws, etc., Japan has the highest level of service quality and has the biggest organizing challenges in the world. We proudly provide the “Japanese style” program for those who want to be ”personal trainers” for improving QOL or Life Organizers. Join us and learn together!

About us
The Japan Association of Life Organizers (JALO) was established on December 1, 2008, as a non-profit organization and became a pioneer in training professional organizers for the first time in Japan.
JALO provides training for Life Organizers, the experts who help people optimize their lives, and support them in starting their businesses and finding jobs.
Rather than just teaching know-how on how to organize their houses, throw things away, and store items, JALO focuses on educating people on how to use their limited time, live a better life, and create time for what they want to do and things that make them happy. JALO was founded to promote the art of organizing life itself and to improve the happiness of the Japanese people, based on the belief that the everyday act of organizing the home is the key to achieving a better life. With the launch of the English program in the summer of 2023, JALO’s goal is to expand the “Japanese way” of Life Organizing methods globally and bring “easier and more comfortable lives” to the world.
